Keeping your windows clean can be a challenging task, but it's an essential one that can make a huge difference in the appearance of your home and make it smell cleaner. However, most window cleaners contain harmful chemicals that are not only bad for the environment but can also be harmful to your health. Luckily, there are plenty of sustainable ways to clean your windows that are easy, effective, and won't break the bank.
Here are some top tips and tricks for cleaning your windows sustainably:
Make your own cleaner:
You can create a simple and effective window cleaner using just 3 ingredients:
1. White Vinegar
3. Essential Oil (Recommended oils: Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange,)
Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle with 8 drops of your citrus oil of choice and you're good to go (Based on a 500ml bottle). This solution is not only cheap, and smells amazing, but is also eco-friendly, and has no harsh chemicals - but most of all, it works great on windows.
Use old newspapers:
Instead of using paper towels or rags to wipe your windows, try using old newspapers. They work just as well and are much more sustainable since they are biodegradable and you are reusing the paper. Remberto place in the compost bin or recycling.
The newspaper has a unique way of adding that shine to your glass windows and has been used for hundreds of years,
Invest in a squeegee:
A squeegee is a great investment for cleaning your windows since it will give you a streak-free finish without using any paper towels or rags. You can find a good quality squeegee at your local Wilco store (Wilco Windo Wiper Metal), some prefer to use a Kracher Window Vac or to be more sustainable you could use the KitchTool Trusty Trio with 3in1 Silicone Scrubber with Nylon Scraper and Squeegee.
Clean your windows on a cloudy day:
Cleaning your windows on a sunny day may sound like a good idea, but it can actually make the cleaning process harder. The sun will dry your cleaner too quickly, leaving streaks behind. It's best to clean your windows on a cloudy day when the temperature is cooler.
Don't forget the frames:
When cleaning your windows, don't forget to clean the frames too. Dust and dirt can build up in the window frames, so be sure to give them a good scrub with a brush or an old toothbrush -
TOP TIP: To disinfect the toothbrush, soak the toothbrush in some 100ml of boiling water and 6 drops of lemon essential oil.
Repurpose old t-shirts:
Instead of throwing away old cotton t-shirts, repurpose them as cleaning rags. Cut them into squares, and you have a sustainable cleaning cloth that is high-grade cotton therefore absorbable that can be washed and reused multiple times.
Clean your windows regularly:
Cleaning your windows regularly can help prevent the buildup of dirt and grime, making the cleaning process much easier in the long run and making the room smell fresh. When you get that sparkle from the window it helps to brighten your day.
By following these tips and tricks, you can clean your windows in a sustainable and affordable way. Plus, you'll be doing your part to help the environment.
